I teach at a Title I School located in an urban area of a major northeastern city. 86% of the student population is economically disadvantaged and receive free and reduced lunch. Because of the financial crisis our state faces in education, it is a huge challenge to acquire the necessary educational, classroom materials my students need to succeed and learn. Also, they do not have the resources at home to help them. 47% of the students are English Language Learners, which makes it a challenge for them to learn basic math skills. Most of these children come from homes where English is rarely or never spoken. This creates a challenge for me as I teach early math skills.
My Project
As a new teacher to my grade and school, as well as returning to the profession after being a stay at home mom; I lack the finances to provide a variety of math center activities for my students that they deserve. These math centers and materials will change my students' lives for the better because they will be able to learn their numbers, as well as begin to use simple addition and substraction through reading, writing, and basic math skills that are key components to creating successful mathematical learners. They will also be able to engage in small group math centers that will help them identify numbers and patterns; as well as understanding measurement. By being able to learn and work with numbers and math concepts, my students will become more knowledgeable and experience a love of learning as every child should.
