My Students

Kindergarten is so much fun! Our students learn in many different ways using all of our senses and multiple intelligences. We use a wide range of techniques to help all the students succeed no matter what their level. Our students attend a Title One school. Most of the students come from families from a low socioeconomic status, with over 70% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Brooklyn. Our school is a caring community of successful learners, which can be seen through collaborative student project based learning in and out of the classroom. Kindergarteners in our classes love to work with hands-on materials and have many different opportunities to practice a skill before it is mastered.

My Project

In a world of standardized testing and college and career readiness, the importance of play can often be overlooked and even disregarded due to the high level of academic work product now expected of young children. What is not recognized is that play is a child’s work. It is the most important way in which these young minds blossom.

Through play, children explore and navigate the social, physical, emotional and cognitive worlds around them.

Benefits of purposeful play include: Social and emotional development, language development, metaphorical and abstract thinking, fine and gross motor skill development, creative thinking, and problem-solving abilities!

Purposeful play is not just any play. Besides being enjoyable, it allows children to make meaning out of their experiences in a way that is engaging and rigorous. This requires teachers to thoughtfully plan for the play experiences and to have the necessary materials to create an environment that nurtures such meaningful growth.

These Magna-tiles will help students in SIX kindergarten classes! Using them they will be able to have materials to support them during purposeful play. It will help the student develop imagination, creativity, mathematical thinking, and social and emotional growth. While building and playing with their peers, children expand their expressive language and learn to cooperate.Your donation will give our students many valuable opportunities to learn through cooperation, exploration and play.
