My science students are vibrant, eager and curious about the world around them. Albert Einstein said, "creativity is intelligence having fun."
The best way to enjoy science class is to get involved actively, not passively!
In my classroom students engage in the processes used by the scientific community through hands-on investigations and real world projects that inspire creativity, require problem solving, and encourage collaboration.
My students are diverse from various socio-economic backgrounds to learning styles and abilities. In my classroom, I have students who are learning English for the very first time and I have students who are advanced learners. Hands-on science learning supports all students and supports the techniques and methods used by scientists. Furthermore, practical projects allow students to foster a curiosity and excitement for science. My hope is that students enjoy science class and become lifelong science learners!
My Project
As a science teacher, I strive to create projects that engage students in inquiry and create a positive learning environment for all students. This year I am teaching a new unit on magnetism. One of the projects I would like students to complete is building a working compass. This project will allow student to understand the properties of magnetism and its connection to the Earth's magnetic field. This will be a fun and exciting project! Not only will students realize how valuable compasses are used by navigators and hikers, but our class will create treasure hunts for other students and practice using their compasses in a fun way.
My students are happiest when they participate in meaningful projects that explore phenomenon in their everyday lives!
Students will use the magnet to magnetize the paperclip (which will function as the compass needle), an aluminum pan to hold the water, and a styrofoam cup to hold the magnetized needle. Students will use the compasses to observe that the compass needle always points to magnetic north.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
