My Students

I teach a group of 25 3rd graders coming from many different backgrounds this year. Many of these students haven't been in a real classroom for over a year in a half, while some did a hybrid model of school, and some others were home-schooled to various levels by family at home.

My Project

In recent years, there's been a huge push to include more engineering and science activities in our schools. As a school located close to Intel, many of my families in our class really value the need for kids to get hands-on building and engineering skills. When visiting a friend's home, I watched her kids play for hours with new magnet tiles. He was completely engaged in building houses, castles, ramps, roads, and all sorts of other buildings with these magnetic tiles. I knew instantly my kids would be engaged for hours with these tiles! When looking into them, I discovered they were a lot more expensive than I could afford on my own. I also know that many of my students love getting to build with Legos. In class, it's even used as a reward for good behavior. By having more access to Legos, more of my students would get the chance to build new skills. The reason I would love to get these tiles and Legos donated as part of Donors Choose is that I would love a different more engaging manipulative for the kids to use in class.I want my students get a chance to experience being an engineer through building with magnets!
