it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The students at our school, and all schools, are significantly behind in all areas of learning. The dynamics of the tiered instruction in the classroom have flipped - normally 80% of our instruction is focused during whole group instruction and about 15% in small groups (5-6 students) targeting a specific skill, and 5% is one-on-one instruction that is even more specialized and individualized.
Now, 80% of our instruction must be small groups (Tier 2) that focus on gaps in learning or reinforces grade-level skills.
To be able to increase small group instruction, lessons created MUST be purposeful and close gaps due to loss of learning.
These magnetic letters and whiteboard tools will be used in small group instruction for a majority of the students in the class (90%). There are critical gaps in phonemic awareness and little to no knowledge of complex vowel patterns. Although 5th grade does not target such emphasis in spelling, we must work to develop these foundational spelling skills to be able to build on to higher level 5th grade reading of multisyllabic words, comprehension, and vocabulary.
