Magnetic Tens Frames To Build Number Sense

My Students

The students in my class love any type of learning that involves hand-on materials. Math is usually the favorite subject for just a handful of students when they begin the year, but my goal is to make math a meaningful and enjoyable learning experience.

My students come from varied backgrounds.

Our school has over 50% of students on free and reduced lunch. Many of my students are eager to learn, but lack educational experiences. These students, in particular, benefit from using hands-on manipulatives to gain an understanding of math concepts.

My Project

We will use the Learning Resources magnetic tens frames during whole group and small group math. During whole group, I will use the tens frames for students to model numbers, addition, and subtraction. My first grade students will likely need additional practice with the tens frames during math stations. At first, students will work through guided lessons using their tens frames. Eventually, I will place the tens frames in an independent work station for students to practice while I am working with groups.

The magnetic tens frames will engage students in hands-on learning of number sense.

Developing a strong number sense early in the year will set the stage for learning future math concepts such addition, subtraction, and place value.
