This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students I teach are in multiple grades and are all in special education. I am truly lucky to have enthusiastic students who love learning. All of the students I teach have learning disabilities but that doesn't stop any of them from trying their best. I convey to the students that the way they learn is just a little different from other students. Having a learning disability doesn't mean that you can't learn, it just means you learn differently. I brought this mindset into the class this year and my students have fully adopted it.
The students in my class encourage each other and lift each other up.
Hearing students tell each other that they can do it and noticing when classmates are doing well without prompting from the teacher makes me smile every day. The momentum I have seen with the positive mindset has been wonderful and I hope they keep this mindset for years to come.
My Project
The students in my class all have learning disabilities which means they learn in a different way. Using math manipulatives helps them learn abstract concepts by having concrete objects to use in their learning. I chose magnetic math manipulatives because they are colorful and easy for the students to manipulate.
I believe the magnetic boards and manipulatives will help the students be excited about learning.
I would use the larger magnetic board for demonstrations and to have the students participate in demonstrating their knowledge to their peers. I also chose to have the individual magnetic boards for the students to have an opportunity to practice what they have learned and demonstrate their knowledge.
