My Students
I teach Technology Enrichment to elementary students in an urban setting. My students enjoy hands-on activities that help them to practice their STEM skills, critical thinking and problem solving. They have been working hard learning to research and create artifact on our computers, but it is time to get out of our chairs!
My third graders had to learn remotely, in front of computers in their homes last year, so we are very excited to be back in the classroom where we can use teamwork to design and build in our tech lab!
The lab has huge magnetic white boards on every wall. It's a nice place to display posters and student work, but we are going to get creative with those walls next month!
Every student will be able to participate. Our class has creative learners with hearing impairments, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and many other diagnosises; nonetheless, these young people are ready to build and meet the engineering challange!
My Project
Our students are ready to embark on an engineering project in which they are challenged to create a course for a ball to follow down a magnetic white board. They use recycled items such as tubes and plastic containers and hang them from our whiteboards using magnetic tape. Every year, they gain knowledge and skills in the area of Innovative Designer. They will use teamwork and collaboration to meet their 3rd grade challenge with their classmates.
This low threshold - high ceiling activity allows students of all abilities to work at their own pace and to the extent that they are able.
Even students with disabilities can access the challenge and feel successful. Children have so much fun, they forget that they are working hard and learning valuable skills for life!
In past years, I have asked parents to donate magnetic tape, but families with limited funds are often unable to contribute. If we are able to supply the magnetic tape, students will need only to supply recycled items which will not put a financial strain on families. All students will be able to contribute to the project with their supplies and creative minds!
