This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from all over the world and have many different levels of English language proficiency. We have students whose families have been in the community for generations, first generation students, and recent newcomers seeking asylum from several different global conflicts. In the recently reopened school library, my goal is to help students develop personal literacy, self-select books for recreational and educational reading, and develop good interpersonal and communication skills.

We need some STEM materials -- specifically, magnet tiles--to keep students engaged in building challenges while waiting for their turn to browse the book collection.

Our library was closed for 7 years, so my students started the year with very little awareness of library manners and browsing strategies. Part of the library was also under construction for the first half of the year, so our collection is crammed into too small of an area for all students to browse at the same time during book checkout. It's hard to be patient if you aren't in the first group.

These materials are a great way for students to work together regardless of their language level. We've seen some conflict between the more established language learners and the newcomers, so I'd love to use these magnet tiles as a bridge to communication and teamwork, even if it is nonverbal. Developing empathy is an important life skill. If students can understand that learning a new language and adjusting to a new country is a slow process, we will all be able to coexist more peacefully.
