My students need supplies to create Henson style Magnanimous Puppets for Social Justice! Fleece is for the puppet's skin, the foam gives it shape, the eggs become eyes. The dowels become puppeteer handles. Let's make a puppet!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are incredible. They are natural artists and make the most of what they have. The school is a Title 1 school where many of my children struggle to have their basic needs met on a daily basis. A few years ago my students suffered the loss of their school, their homes, and their belongings in Sandy. This is a resilient - but none-the-less challenged - community of diverse learners. I know a great art program can provide a magical haven where students can express emotions, deepen their capacity for creative problem solving, and build the futures they dream of! All this while learning hands-on skills that matter and working through complex ideas. Making something from nothing feels powerful. It gives us purpose and intent. Help me give my student these incredible gifts.
My Project
Students will create these dynamic and impressive puppets based on a phenomenal NAEA workshop I took and what I learned at it. I left the workshop profoundly inspired and eager to bring this back to my students. Please help me make this a reality!
My eighth grade students are a diverse group of learners at an age where social justice causes are of great import to them, so I want to capitalize on this and let them design a Jim Henson style puppet inspired by a social issue they are passionate about.
I know this would be a project that students would save for years to come and would live on in their memories for a long time. The puppets are made from the fleece and then given shape with a bit of the foam mattress on the inside. The dowels become puppeteer sticks attached to the hands and the plastic eggs and styrofoam balls are transformed into eyes. The felt is to create clothing and/or decorative accents that help create character.
Since I will also ask them to create skits for the younger students in our school about their chosen social justice issue - with their puppets of course - it will benefit the whole school! This is a chance for students to teach students while developing a character that functions as a mouthpiece.
My hope is that The Magnanimous Puppets Project will foster a community of respect and understanding among the students in my school.
