My students come from many diverse backgrounds, and many are highly impacted by poverty. I strive to make school a safe, happy place for them to be each day. Many students in our school are English Language Learners, and work so hard to overcome this obstacle. They are amazing, and soar to reach great academic achievements in spite of the challenges in their lives.
There is no better reward as a teacher, than that of seeing the “light” come on in the eyes of each student as they learn something new.

My Project
In the past, the most enticing classroom rewards for students have always included sugary sweets. Our school is trying to promote healthy lifestyles for our students by encouraging exercise and nutritionally balanced school lunches.
I would like to carry the healthy habits our students are learning to our classroom reward system.
Rather than have the class treasure box filled with sugar and empty calories, I would love the students to be able to choose from fun and exciting prizes that are sugar and calorie-free! Squishies and unicorns are all the rage with fourth graders, and I've found several variations of each of these things that the kiddos will be excited to earn. My students also love interesting and unique writing tools, and I've included a wide variety of these as well. Nothing is better than using a fancy new pencil on your assignment, and there are plenty of these to go around.
Unfortunately, these prizes tend to be more expensive than a piece of candy. With your help, I can provide a classroom reward system that still motivates my students, but also promotes a healthy lifestyle that is crucial to being ready to learn.
