Magical Moments in Kindergarten

My Students

Do you know how to engage 30 kindergarten students on your own? It's hard work, but with engaging hands on learning stations I can embed academic skills into exciting play-based work stations.

My students are primarily English language learners from across the world.

Many students have come from refugee camps, or have moved to Oregon for a better life. They are Burmese, Karen, Vietnamese, Russian, Somalian, Turkish, Spanish, Iraqi, Romanian, Ukrainian, and more. These students have many challenges including poverty. Over 95% of my students live below the poverty level and are on free or reduced lunch. Despite their obstacles, they have amazing attendance, attitudes and a love for learning. My students are smart and loving children who need hands on learning experiences to make their academic and social skills blossom. Please help me challenge and inspire my students in ways they have never explored by contributing to this project.

My Project

I have requested a sand and water table to fill with interesting objects for students to explore. There are magnetic fishing poles to hunt for ABCs and 123s, and materials to explore sinking and floating. My students need to build background knowledge for how things work as they explore letters and numbers. I requested many tubs of sorting objects for making patterns and counting. We have a new online math program that relies on teachers having certain materials. The hard truth is - we don't have the materials we need to teach. The materials in this order such as buttons, tangrams, attribute blocks, and double sided counters will supplement the math program so it is child-centered and put exciting resources in the hands of children. The common core standards have raised the bar for what we expect of our children - and I want my 5 year old students to have fun while they are on the road to success.

We all know that when students are having fun they enjoy school.

My project requests materials that will literally be in the hands of my students day after day for years to come. They will explore, learn, make music, sort, count, sink, float, build, listen, and LOVE school with the materials provided by this project. I hope that you will help me make my students' first year in school magical!
