I teach at a large urban elementary school where 100% of our district students qualify for free lunch. Our neighborhood can be classified as economically disadvantaged. It consists of housing projects and tenement apartments. We have a high population of students who are Level 1 English Language Learners. Most of these students have just entered the country and/or school for the first time.
My students face challenges of poverty, hunger, special needs, and non-English speaking homes.
Our school has been granted the Extended Learning Grant which extended our school day and school year as well as the majority of our students attend after school programming.
My Project
Problem solving is the weakness my students display with English as a second language. Often my students can complete the operations but lack the language to understand the problems being asked to complete. These fun and interactive math manipulatives with help them develop their problem solving skills as well as their skills in computation. The daily Journals will help continued practice for the students. The card games will help with their math skills as well as their social skills and development of their English language. My students are eager to learn and the math manipulative will help them feel independent and successful.
