Magical Magazines

My students need diverse reading materials in the form of magazines that are interactive, engaging, and up-to-date.

My Students

I teach a diverse population of students. My students are composed of academically gifted learners to those who struggle mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially. The one dynamic that they all share is the ability to love, learn, and grow at their own pace. In order to reach all my students' potentials I have to be creative, flexible, and extremely organized. This requires changing up the norm and creatively following the curriculum while also meeting all of my students' unique needs. A huge task, but a labor of love that I have done for over 20 years now. Why? Because it's my passion and what God has led me to do.

My Project

These materials from Scholastic will give my students "choice" in the reading process. For those who are reluctant readers, magazines provide a nonthreatening way to stay informed. No longer will students simply pick up a book in my room and place it back down because it looks too "big" and too "overwhelming" to read. Scholastic Action magazines trick kids into reading nonfiction because of the way it is organized. The writing and textural structure entices students to continue to read to find out facts as well as trick them into learning. Who would have thought reading could be so much fun?
