Help me give my students a class set of Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone so that they can read themselves into the wizarding world!
I am teaching a 3rd-grade class of all girls this year! My students are excited about learning and are especially enthusiastic about reading. My goal is to share my own love of books with them and introduce them to a wide range of wonderful literature.
My school is in the south Bronx and my students come from many different backgrounds.
Some of them are dealing with difficulties in their home lives, but positive experiences in school can support them and help them feel more secure. Not all of my students have many books of their own at home, so I want to provide them with the opportunity to borrow books from our classroom library and to share the experience of reading great books together.
Over my 20+ years of teaching, I've seen the incredible power of reading aloud to students. Every day after lunch, my students and I gather together to read from a chapter book. This simple routine becomes a shared experience that students will refer to years afterward. I've read Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone to several 3rd-grade classes in the past, and it has been the beginning of an obsession with the characters and the wizarding world.
How much better would it be if each student had her own book to read along with me?
We would be able to read the text in a different way if each student had the book in front of her. We could delve into the ways that J. K. Rowling uses language and how she makes her characters and her world seem so real. This deeper reading would inspire students to read more of the series on their own and let their imaginations create their own magical worlds.
