This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
At my school, located in North Richmond, we believe in serving the whole child: academically, socially, and emotionally. My students are growing up in a neighborhood that has a rich and complex history. Each new student that joins our school community has a powerful story to tell.
Despite life’s challenges, my students are curious, exuberant learners.
They crave and embrace new experiences that will enhance their knowledge and wisdom. My students are on a journey of growing their minds and hearts every day. At school, it can be difficult to experience exuberance and success on a daily basis.
A change of setting will provide an extremely rare opportunity for my students to learn and grow by stepping out of their comfort zones. For some, this will be their first time away from their families.
Not only will my students experience the outdoors during winter on this trip, but they will also partake in this new adventure as a team.
My Project
On this special three-day, two-night field trip, students will have an authentic, hands-on learning experience.
This year, our 2nd annual overnight field trip with the Gateway Mountain Center will have an even greater impact: we will bring 40 fifth graders from both fifth grade classes!
They will learn about the science of snow by snowshoeing. They will learn about California history by hiking Donner Summit. They will learn about the carbon sequestration capacity of local trees by exploring in the forest. This field trip is an opportunity to open students' eyes to the wonder of nature and the possibility of life.
