Magic Carpet: A Seat for Every Child

My students need a carpet as safe, comfortable and consistent place to gather, relax, and learn in my classroom.

My Students

This rug will provide a comfortable place for students to gather for group activities like story time, math games, phonics activities and "Read to Self" time. Having a defined seating space provides consistency and helps control distracting behaviors which helps growing minds learn more effectively.

My kindergartners come from a variety of backgrounds and many are economically disadvantaged.

Our school is a Title I school in central Texas. Title I school means 40% or more of the students enrolled qualify for free and reduced lunch. These students face many social challenges both at home and out in the world, but when my kinders come to school they have a bright outlook on the new day and a thirst for learning.

My Project

Having a comfortable spot for each my kinders to learn helps encourage learning in many ways. Bright colors encourage creativity, individual squares provide personal learning space with low distractions, and a quality rug means a soft, comfortable, safe and welcoming spot for the next learning spark to light up their minds. Students will use the rug for large group activities such as story time or "brain breaks", small group activities like math or phonics activities and game or puzzle time; partner activities like "Buddy Read" or social studies projects, and individual activities such as "Read to Self" or quiet time. My kinders often come from homes where they have to share personal space, including beds, with other family members. In their classroom home, they have their own space in a cubby, their own space at their assigned table spot and I want them to have a space they can call their own during some of the most important learning times of the day.

This rug will improve my classroom in a way that will add to the welcoming tone I set for all of my students to arrive at their school home.

So many of my students come from inconsistent households, so I want their classroom to be "home away from home" where they can predict, with 100% accuracy, that they will feel safe and comfortable in their very own space. If my kinders can't always have a space to call their own at home, I want them to have that experience in their school home.
