Public School 31 is located in Staten Island, NY. It is a Title 1 elementary school and has a large minority student population from predominantly low-income families. Our students face the challenges of poverty, high crime rates, adult illiteracy, transience and single parent families. Low literacy achievement has predominated in our environment. As my students enter first grade many of them lack the necessary skills to become independent readers. My program is a balance literacy program that integrates the many aspects of literacy to promote successful readers. I am asking for materials that will help my students learn to decode, to build word recognition skills, to practice phoneme blending, to recognize spelling patterns, and to become storyteller themselves. The materials will reinforce the skills taught during mini lessons and some will provide self-checking practice to allow for children to become more independent. It is important for them to get a strong start as they learn to read so that they can become confident lifelong learners.
