Magic Boards for First Grade

My students need 20 Magic Boards and 3 sets of practice cards to learn and retain phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling.

My Students

Why do we call it first grade? I think we call it first because it is the first time students learn things for the first time. Students in 1st grade are expected to transition from knowing parts of the alphabet to reading books and being able to comprehend them.

We call our classroom a learning lab because we believe all students can learn and need to be challenged at their academic level.

If students are misreading words, skipping words, or reading slowly they struggle and won’t become good readers. If these problems aren't fixed they permanently block students from developing into great readers. Good readers read accurately, rapidly, automatically and with high comprehension. Strong phonics skills, along with spoken language fluency, are essential for good reading.

My Project

Our class needs Magic Boards to become better readers. In order to learn and retain letter names, letter sounds, phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling while reading. Students need guided lessons of discovery to manipulate letters to make new words. By having Magic Boards students have the constant resource to practice letter names and sounds. They also would be given to the opportunity to learn phonemic awareness as they move and stretch out words and listen for the sounds they hear. With Magic Boards students would also learn phonics by practicing, reading, and seeing the relationship between letters and their sounds.

I am very fortunate to have students who want to read and who want to feel accomplished.

As an educator I want them to have every opportunity to feel successful in the classroom and I want them to have all the right skills to be able to read a good book on their own.
