Remember walking into a library and finding a book or magazine that kept you entertained for hours? Some children that want to read are sometimes unable to acquire the reading materials at the appropriate level that will inspire them to keep reading.
This year, I have the wonderful opportunity to teach a very talented and diverse group of 6th graders.
We were fortunate enough to raise enough money to open our own classroom book nook where students can check out books; our school has no library! My students absolutely love reading but are now wanting some more nonfiction reading materials.
My Project
Every day, we have half an hour of Read to Self where students are able to read anything that interests them. With the magazines from Scholastic, they will now be able to keep up and read about more current events. Students will have the opportunity to read a new, age appropriate magazine at least once every week thanks to the Scholastic subscriptions to Storyworks and Scholastic News.
With these Scholastic magazines, my students will now be exposed to various types of reading materials instead of only being able to choose chapter books.
Children should always have the opportunity to choose something to read that interests them!
