My Students
The walls of our school were built to confine and punish students who decided to break the rules. However, it is the role of an educator to identify and break down all barriers that prevent each student from reaching his or her full potential as a learner and eventual asset to the community.
It is from the ashes of each students past missteps and trampled futures that springs a phoenix, a reborn warrior full of light and possibilities.
When most everyone has given up on our students, we see minds struggling due to home life, trama, experiences a child shouldn't have. Teachers spend whatever time that is required to build up each student and calm the mind. Teenagers who traditionally would end up in a youth center, instead enroll in college after graduation or begin a profession.
My Project
It is common for the teachers at our school to read an article in the local newspaper about a teenager caught committing a crime and a few days later have that teenager enrolled in his or her class. Our students don't typically read or watch then news, they are in fact, the ones written about in the news.
We want to change the relationship our students have with news outlets by giving them the opportunity to learn about world issues, social issues, and fine arts and promote the use of that knowledge to support their interpretation of non-fiction throughout their high school career.
It is well-known that Texas students score low on the informational text section of the STAAR test. Our teachers feel having timely and factual articles will engage the students far more than released tests.
