It is common for the teachers at our school to read an article in the local newspaper about a teenager caught committing a crime and a few days later have that teenager enrolled in his or her class. Our students don't typically read or watch then news, they are in fact, the ones written about in the news. We want to change the relationship our students have with news outlets by giving them the opportunity to learn about world issues, social issues, and fine arts and promote the use of that knowledge to support their interpretation of non-fiction throughout their high school career. It is well-known that Texas students score low on the informational text section of the STAAR test. Our teachers feel having timely and factual articles will engage the students far more than released tests.
