Magazines Making EL Students' Vocabulary More Meaningful

My Students

I teach several classes of middle school English Learners (EL). My students come from various backgrounds, including academic abilities, cultures, home languages, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some things that they have in common, however, are that they are eager to learn and are curious about the world.

My students are hard workers.

They strive to do their best and achieve. The students want to make themselves and their parents proud. Unfortunately, they have many hardships to work through on a daily basis. Despite this, they are motivated, caring, and funny!

My Project

Middle school is full of new vocabulary, especially for an English Language Learner. In the fall, we will be using our class time to focus on the acquisition of science and math vocabulary. We know that with the amount of English vocabulary in science and math, they need more targeted lessons to retain the necessary words. I feel that having these magazine subscriptions, which include online resources, will really help the students with the task of learning new vocabulary. They also will love the articles, photos, and examples that Scholastic provides in their top-notch educational magazines.
