Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Being in a low socioeconomic community, it is important that our students are exposed to a variety of experiences through literature. Our campus and, correspondingly, my 2018-2019 school year's class, have a high number of students with special needs. Many students are also bilingual and are only exposed to English language and literature while at school. Our school maintains high expectations for all students, and I am looking to enhance their experience and encourage a love of reading regardless of their backgrounds.
My Project
When talking to other third grade reading teachers, many have recommended going online for text and having students learn reading skills through computer programs. Although I admit some of these programs can assist in learning, there is nothing better than high interest reading material that you can hold in your hands. With iPads and computers dominating our world, many children have not seen or used a magazine before. I know that exposing my students to the Storyworks Jr magazines with a variety of genres and practical reading skills through high interest text will increase their exposure, knowledge, and interest in reading.
