Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is a discount ticket to everywhere. Since my students rarely get to experience the world, I try to bring the world to them. Scholastic Magazine provides me with the resources to help students become more informed citizens.

My Title 1 school services a diverse group of students who face many hardships daily.

Most students, and parents alike, come from homes where English is a second language. Despite what many may see as setbacks, my students are enthusiastic and motivated to face challenges head on. In turn, they motivate me to find ways to enrich their education to help them reach their full potential.

My Project

This magazine subscription will allow my students to read articles that are written with the interests of young adults in mind. They allow me to bring current events to life and show students how important issues affect them. Students will get the opportunity to study nonfiction, ask/answer higher level questions, form their own opinions, and express those ideas in writing. Skills met through the articles include: main idea and detail, text features, claims and evidence, and vocabulary. These magazines will be used in both whole group and center work where students will deepen their comprehension of text and understanding of the world.

My students are hungry for knowledge.

These last two years, I've watched as students devoured the information presented to them in the magazines, anticipated the arrival of the magazines each week, and welcomed the discussions that followed. I am eager to provide that same experience for my upcoming classes!
