My Students

I am a K-3 Reading Teacher in the Rochester City School District. I started a Little Free Library at my school to provide free reading materials. Many don't have books or magazines at home to read. My hope is to increase motivation to read and inspire the LOVE OF READING

My school includes a diverse group of students with over fifteen different languages spoken!

We are in a high poverty area and many parents speak limited English. Many students do not have a variety of reading materials for parents to read aloud to the child or for the child to read. The students are excited to come to school everyday and take books and magazines from the Free Little Library to bring home and read with their families. I see the Kindergarten students most often picking out things to read!

My Project

Each month the Scholastic Magazines will be put in the Little Free Library for the students to borrow and bring back to school for other students to borrow. The great thing about magazines is that students can read the articles, which is quicker and easier than reading a longer picture book or chapter book. Magazines are shown to increase reading interest and motivation. Another great part of the Scholastic Magazines is the online resources for teachers and students.

Reading is essential to school success and providing the students with materials to read will help their reading skills.

The goal at my school is to have students reading by third grade. Getting students to enjoy reading early on is an important part of this process. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal! Donations to my project will be greatly appreciated and really help the students at our School!
