Our school is older, but it is a building full of loving and committed professionals who want to do what is best for kids. Some of them have taught there since my husband was a student at our school. We have a strong community identity and, while we look like a traditional American small-town, it is a place that welcomes people from all over the world. When students are struggling, they have a whole team doing everything they can to support them. We lack some resources and finding money is a struggle, but we do great things with what we have.
When other people worry about our future, I remember the amazing young people in my classes.
They give me hope. About 1/3 of my students are in financial distress. Others are affluent or middle-class. I have students who are recent immigrants from all over the world, and students who are growing up on farms inherited from grandparents.
My Project
Have you ever heard students ooh and ahh over reading materials? I have! When they see a new, colorful Scholastic magazine that has a beautiful picture on the front, they get EXCITED to read. When students see a story that echoes current events and pop culture, they want to see what it is all about.
Studies have shown that Free Voluntary Reading is the most efficient way to acquire a language and build proficiency.
Please help my students to move along their path to proficiency with these high-interest magazines.
Students will be able to select these magazines from our FVR library in my class. Even though every student will not have a copy, that is no problem. Actually, it builds excitement for the magazines. Students see their friends reading a copy of Allons-y or Que Tal? by Scholastic and they want to read it next. Students even hurry into class to make sure they get it the next day!
These reading materials will make a daily difference in my classroom and keep reading new and exciting with a monthly infusion of new and timely reading material.
