This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Is the next Marie Curie, George Washington Carver, or Louis Pasteur in my classroom? I hope so, but will I be able to tap into the "Mad Scientist" within each of them?
I teach 1st grade at a fantastic urban school in a working class community near downtown Los Angeles. Nearly 100% of the students are on free or reduced lunch and most are English language learners. Nearly 75% of them are native Spanish speakers and about 1/5 of them have some sort of learning disability or autism. They are a great group of kids that are always eager to learn new things and share them with everyone they know.
Science is one of their favorite subjects. Sadly, many teachers skip science for lack of time and resources. However, every year, I make time in our busy academic schedule to teach several Science Units. Science is a subject full of new and difficult concepts and tons of vocabulary. It is often very difficult for my students to access this information. I have found that the best way for them to learn is through experiments and other hands-on activities. Students love to get their hands dirty and really experience the science that I talk about.
The materials I have requested will be a much needed addition to my limited collection of Science resources. Teaching the three states of matter can be challenging. However, with an activity tub full of great experiments, I know that my students will catch on quickly. They will also enjoy learning about the water cycle and parts of a flower with magnetic boards they can use independently or with a friend. They will also be able to see real plant specimens that will help them clearly understand the parts of a plant. I am excited to use the pocket chart and other activity tubs to enhance my lessons. More importantly, I am excited to see my students use these materials. They will not only improve their English but learn valuable wcience knowledge as well. Best of all, they will enjoy every minute of it!
Science instruction is slowly fading from many classrooms. I have made a commitment to continue teaching these important ideas and concepts. Now I just need a little help making it more accessible for all of my students. With your help, my students can become the scientists I always knew they could be!
