Kindergarten is a time for exploration and discovery. Five year old students are interested in everything; the most mundane topic can inspire enormous excitement and incredible ideas. Just imagine the learning yucky, many-legged, and slimy science could offer!
Few of my kindergartners attend preschool, so this is their first chance to get down and dirty with science!
Unfortunately we are a high-poverty school in a state that is currently 49th in education funding. This means that gooey, gross, important science is out of reach.
Through science, my students develop habits of mind they need to thrive at school. They predict outcomes, experiment, record data, and write about their results. They become active learners who eagerly inquire and investigate. Rather revolting projects inspire immediate excitement, but also teach key concepts: plant life cycles, using the five senses, viscosity, color and light, evaporation, and states of matter. In kindergarten, students build the foundation that will serve them not just in elementary school, but through science courses in college.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of strange, glutinous, stinky, delightful science supplies: carnivorous plants, various supersaturates to make goo and slime, a sensory chemistry kit, and some weird and wonderful magnets. To keep my young scientists safe, I am also requesting a class set of goggles.
Your generosity will provide hours of exciting science for my kindergarten students.
They will investigate, experiment, and cackle with glee as they explore some of the finest, grossest things our world can offer. Please support our future (mad) scientists!
