My Students

I teach in a school where the student population is linguistically and culturally diverse, and which serves a community with families from all over the world. I am always looking for highly engaging, creative ways to tap into my students' hunger for knowledge and their curiosity about the world, whether it is through art, music, dance, or literature.

I see the exciting possibilities that I can make available to my students who need opportunities to explore creative and critical thinking through different learning modalities.

And I am often touched by the level of care and kindness with which all my students help each other in our quest to learn. Now, even in my 20th year as an educator, my students never cease to amaze me with their persistence and grit in learning new content, as well as their inquisitiveness, creativity, and eagerness to learn new things.

My Project

At this time of the school year, many of my second graders still need practice with their foundational reading skills, namely in phonemic awareness and phonics. The Common Core standard, "Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words" (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.2.3.A) is essential for readers of all ages to learn, but it can be rather dull!

The tools I would like to have for my students would make foundational practice more fun, and hopefully, make learning stick.

Reading rods, unifix letter blend cubes, and transparent color counters are hands-on manipulatives to be used for spelling and sentence construction activities, the guided reading highlighting strips will help children to focus on specific words and small areas of text, and the Wikki stix will add a multi-sensory, kinesthetic element to word-building lessons and games. We will use the flashlights for fun, Flashlight Reading Fridays, just because reading in the dark is cool! Finally, I would greatly appreciate the TpT gift cards to purchase digital literacy materials based on the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching language. The use of all the materials I mention here will be geared precisely towards teaching with this approach in mind.
