Mad About Math! Students love to be hands on in the learning process. They need to be actively involved in the learning process to gain understanding of the concepts being taught. I believe there is truth in the Chinese Proverb – I see, I forget. I hear, I remember. I do, I understand.
I teach in a K-3 school with a population of 580 students with 35 teacher units.
We have approximately 40% of our student population on free or reduced lunch. Due to cutbacks and proration our funding has been cut severely. We are concerned how the BP oil spill has affected our community and families. Our schools are funded through our tax dollars which have been drastically reduced due to the decline of tourism and local spending in our county. We are often looking for creative ways to get funding to continue providing our students with a research based and data driven education. Funding of this project will bring a level of dynamics to my classroom that would stimulate student learning to the highest level.
My Project
I use manipulatives as often as I can during my math instruction. However, I am limited with materials. I would like to purchase some various math materials to provide as much opportunity for students to be engaged in my math lessons as possible. I focused my project request on materials that will increase student learning on skills that are most challenging on our state school assessment. I would like to purchase probability spinners-students can work with partners on probability practice. Magnetic money-identifying, counting and making change with money is a challenging skill for third graders. Also, a comparing numbers game kit will give students opportunity to compare fractions, money values, and place values.
Understanding comes when students are able to touch, feel, and manipulate materials that are related to what they are learning.
My desire for my classroom is to have unlimited opportunity to instruct my students using manipulative's with every skill being taught. Student success is essential to learning. There will be more opportunity for success using manipulative's as an instrument for instruction.
