My Students

My kids are rural kids that like an opportunity to learn in different ways, whether it's outdoors or exploring models to learn about science. I love that my students are curious and want to do projects that allow them to dig right in! They love to learn about science in fun, creative ways.

My Project

Students need nets to collect aquatic macroinvertebrates at two local creeks, for observation and identification using a dichotomous key. We then release them back to the creek. It's an excellent hands-on activity that gets them outside, in nature and discovering things they never noticed before!

As part of the Minnesota Trout in the Classroom Program, after students collect and identify creek macroinvertebrates, they then use them to calculate biotic index of a creek to determine creek health for later release of fingerling trouts they have raised over the course of the year.
