My Students
My wonderful preschool students face many struggles: poverty, parental neglect, and domestic violence. Our kids qualify for both Title I funding and Headstart, which means they battle crippling poverty on a daily basis. Some have just arrived in the U.S.
We strive to provide a safe, welcoming, and loving environment for our kids, full of enriching experiences.
We hope to encourage them daily in their quest to obtain the skills necessary for a successful Kindergarten year.
Often, our greatest challenge is lack of funding for classroom supplies we need to provide enriching experiences for our students. Parents struggle to meet basic needs, and it is not unusual to get little to no funding at all for necessary supplies.
My Project
Simple machines are used everywhere but children often don't notice their use until they are exposed to the concepts of each machine. A child builds a car, but doesn't realize the wheel and axle make the car go. As a preschool teacher, our curriculum uses hands-on learning, because we feel it is the best way to learn.
With the Lego simple machine kits, and the other simple machine materials, my students can learn all about the simple machines used daily in life through exploration and play.
Using familiar toys such as Legos, students can build simple machines into their block creations, utilizing problem-solving strategies in a fun, creative way.
While playing and exploring, children are also using their fine motor skills, a skill essential to Kindergarten.
