Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many students are turned off by science because they're intimidated by the content, and they have a difficult time relating it to their lives. My goal is to create an open and inviting environment where all students feel like they can be scientists.
My students are from the South Bronx.
Due to the issues my students face on an everyday basis, many of my students have an interest in fields that serve others. Because of this, I've created an Investigative Biology course, which allows students to dive into the role of scientists and medical professionals. This allows students to use science to fuel their interest in social and biological issues that directly affect their lives.
My Project
Due to the nature of this course, Internet research is essential for all students, and electronic word processing is required to accommodate the individual needs of some of my students. Unfortunately, our school's budget leaves very little room to invest in technology and we are at a large deficit for computers.
Many of my students do not have cable, computers, and Internet access at home, so school is the only way that they can learn about the big issues that are happening in the world today.
In addition, the study and the practice of STEM are greatly limited when there is no access to the technology that a Macbook would provide my students. Technology and the use of computers can help students with ADHD focus better in the classroom. The addition of just a single Macbook will help provide internet access for my students for research, as well as technological support for the success students with ADHD.
