My Students
Imagine an oasis of art in a city, populated by students from every socioeconomic group, every background, every creative interest. That is my school, an arts magnet school that attracts students from every borough of NYC to pursue visual art, music, dance, and theater. For four years, they take both studio classes and academics to graduate with a diploma and a special designation for pre-professional training in the arts.
Though they may be destined for Broadway or MoMA, English is not necessarily their strong suit.
I strive to create a class environment that has routines but is flexible, academically rigorous, and still creative. It helps to have a variety of resources to do that—books to differentiate instruction, a projector, and document camera to show lessons, movies, and art. The students challenge me to innovate, to get creative, and to make the esoteric laws of reading and writing accessible.
My Project
Making Zoom class engaging is HARD! I am trying to offer my students opportunities for scintillating discussion, shared writing, and interactive reading, but my current laptop is not up to the task. Right now, with my current computer's processor, I can only see a portion of my students' videos and names at a time. While I spend time scrolling through the faces to find the ones with their hands raised (in person or using the icons), they lose interest or feel like they're not being heard. Operating engaging apps like Padlet or Mentimeter, showing videos, or even running breakout rooms is a Herculean task for my geriatric computer. With a new laptop, I will be able to see ALL of my students in one screen to enable me to handle classroom management and participation. With a new laptop, I will be able to up my technology game and offer opportunities for interaction with my amazing artists.
Though my district is working hard to get devices in students' hands, funds for outfitting teachers' home "classrooms" are scarce.
More than half of students from low‑income households
