Mac-Ing Speech Teletherapy Fun

My Students

"Ms. B, can I try again?" I never get tired of hearing this! I work with special needs children who have difficulty with speech and language development.

My students attend a NYC public school and all receive mandated speech-language therapy to help them access the curriculum.

Their communication needs vary greatly. I work on improving their receptive, expressive and social thinking skills as well as speech intelligibility. Many of my students are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Selective Mutism, Intellectual Disabilities, ADHD, Social Communication Disorders and Cerebral Palsy.

In March 2020, my students faced an even greater challenge when schools were closed due to COVID-19. Teletherapy was a new experience for both myself and my students but we persevered. Overnight, I had to learn about digital platforms as well as completely rebuild my therapy toolkit since I could no longer use my hands-on manipulatives. My students had to work harder than before in order to continue to make progress towards their IEP goals. Since September 2020, we have continued to work through highs and lows as school reopened for several weeks for hybrid learning then closed again.

My Project

This is a BIG ask but my students have been through a lot this year! I am requesting a MacBook Air to help make my teletherapy sessions more efficient, engaging and fun. The laptop I was provided by the city was never intended for teletherapy, so unfortunately, it is very limited in it's capabilities. Not only are there glitches in audio daily, the laptop lacks many features which help my students when in teletherapy sessions.

A new MacBook would allow me to share more applications simultaneously such as BOOM cards, Epic!, and Vooks.

It will also provide clearer audio which is especially needed when working on speech sound disorders. My students would also be able to have remote control access so they can actively participating in tasks.
