My students need 18 math books and other basic materials, like tutor math boxes and 6 soft seats, to help them grasp fundamental skills. and to have a comfortable place to sit.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like to learn a concept in a language you were not familiar with? That is the challenge my English language learners face during math time. "The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives," said Robert Maynard Hutchins.
My 18 enthusiastic, energetic, equally motivated, wonderful kindergarten students all qualify for free lunch.
They are eager to learn and experience new things every day. Many of them do not understand or speak English very well, but we are making progress in that area. The school is located in one of the lowest income areas of our school district. Our school has limited monetary resources due to recent budget cuts, and as teachers we received very little to purchase items for our classrooms. Since my students do come from low income families, my class doesn't participate in book clubs. This is the reason I am requesting math books to supplement the math curriculum.
My Project
The children will enjoy and gain a better understanding of new and difficult math concepts with these math-based books. The titles combine pictures, words and math to illustrate each themed concept. Themes include patterns, capacity, size, shapes, counting, opposites, numbers, matching, addition, subtraction and more. The students will be learning math and skill building through literacy.
The Math Tutor boxes come with exclusive math materials that I plan to use as intervention, to help struggling students get back-on-track. I will be able to use them in small group instruction, with differentiated activities that address different learning styles. The soft seats that I requested are ideal for sitting activities. They will no longer have to sit on the cold bare floor to read to self or to others.
Students have great allies: intelligence, curiosity, parental support, individuality, and creativity.
They just need the right tools. The impact of this project will bring understanding of math concepts that will help them in first grade.
