M-I-Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter, I... Introducing Students to Mississippi Literature

Help me give my students an opportunity to connect with their native state's literature!

My Project

After teaching both in north Mississippi and south Mississippi, I noticed that while Mississippi is full of renowned authors, many students have not read Mississippi literature. While Faulker and Grisham are some of the big names, these are frequently difficult for secondary students to understand and find relatable.

After meeting Tom Franklin at the University of Mississippi during my junior year of college, I knew I wanted to incorporate his book Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter into my secondary classroom.

My first year of teaching, I was fortunate to teach an elective course titled Mississippi Writers, in which this was our focal novel. However, as I got moved to English 2 and the demands of state-testing, this book fell out of my curriculum.

As I'm currently gearing up to maintain my National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification, I'm excited to bring this book back into my classroom to incorporate into my components. English 3 focuses on American literature, and I'm so glad that my students will have the opportunity to focus on literature even closer to home. I need more novels so that all students are able to have their own copy!
