My Project
At M. School in Park Slope, Brooklyn, our Green Team is a spirited crew of 6th–8th graders who meet after school to turn climate concern into climate action. These budding scientists come from diverse backgrounds—more than 70 % of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch—but they share a common curiosity about how science and innovation can make our community more sustainable. The Green Team has already organized clothing-swap events, pollinator gardens, and beach cleanups; now they’re ready to level-up with hands-on, year-round food production.
We’re asking for a classroom-sized hydroponic system and supporting supplies (LED grow lights, nutrient solution, pH testers, seed starter plugs, and reusable net pots).
Hydroponics lets students grow herbs, leafy greens, and strawberries indoors without soil, using 90 % less water than traditional farming—perfect for our city setting. W
Hydroponics turns abstract NGSS standards into living, edible evidence. Students will explore plant physiology, ecosystems, and sustainable engineering while practicing data literacy and teamwork. The project also amplifies our mission to show middle-schoolers that they can be innovators who combat food insecurity and climate change—right here, right now.
