Lyricists' Lounge at Skyline High: An After-School Music Club
My students need equipment for the "Lyricists' Lounge" club I plan to start next school year. Lyricists' Lounge will be an after-school club where students can work on writing rhymes and making beats.

My Students
With this club I hope to share my knowledge of beatmaking (which has been a hobby of mine for almost 16 years), as well as give them a space to write. Students will be able to work through issues and develop their voices as writers, building with each other to improve their skills.
This club will give students a space to express themselves, be creative, and build their skills with each other; as stated earlier, I believe this will carry over to academics, increasing investment in English class and school in general!
I brought this idea up to my students and many have already expressed strong interest. I think this will be a fantastic opportunity for our students!
My Project
Lyricists' Lounge will be an after-school club where students can learn/work on digital music production and writing rhymes. I plan to provide them with instruction on beatmaking, and give them guided prompts and feedback on their song writing. I also plan to bring in outside organizations and speakers, such as the Oakland-based non-profit Hip Hop for Change, to provide additional support and instruction. I am trying to raise money mainly for a Maschine MK3 MIDI Controller. This is a top-of-the-line piece of hardware that will allow students to learn music production the way that professionals do it. Having hardware and not just software will make it feel more real and exciting for the students, getting them to be more invested in the club, and giving them more of a sense of pride in it. The remainder of the equipment I'm asking for will allow the students to hear their production in high quality (speakers) and eventually record full songs (microphone and accessories).
One of my assistant principals, to whom I had mentioned this idea previously, came up to me after the last day of school and told me, "you need to start that hip-hop club; that's the type of thing that will keep kids in school."
It is my belief that this club will empower some struggling students who are less engaged with school, and give them a sense of community within their school and attachment to it which they do not have currently. I believe that this will all have the effect of making these students more invested in school, and thus improving their academic achievement and educational outcomes. I think this can be a huge difference maker for some Skyline students, and appreciate your help so much!
