FULLY FUNDED! Ms. W.'s classroom raised $628
This project is fully funded
PS116Q, The William C. Hughley School, is located in an impoverished section of Queens, New york. The school population of 816 students often has lunchtime recess indoors due to inclement weather. A lunchtime library lending cart with age appropriate books for our students will help to increase their ability to decide on a book to read, and foster a sense of pride in having to care for that book during recess. The students already have reading journals, and this will allow them time to enter books as they read them at recess.
All too often, our students sit in the auditorium and watch a short video, or worse, never finish watching the video. The lunch personnel changes daily. The children rarely have the opportunity to complete a video during the same week. If we get the library lending cart up and running, I would be available during the lunch periods to oversee the project. I would also train other lunchtime monitors (upper grade students) to man the cart. These monitors can also serve as reading monitors. I envision a small group of four kindergarteners sitting and listening to a dramatic reading by an upper grade student. We can have 20 upper grade students reading at a time. The gymnasium will also be used for this ever so special reading time. With this proposal, our whole school will be involved during each of our three lunch periods. We will also be able to share these books during our evening PTA meetings with those children that come with their parents. Literacy will lend itself to reading improvement at PS116Q. Please help us to fill our cart with age appropriate books for our students that range from Kindergarten to Seventh Grade. We love reading and sharing at PS116Q.
