Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am currently a fourth grade teacher at P.S. 48, The Joseph Rodman Drake School in Hunts Point, an impoverished section of the South Bronx. This is my third year teaching the same students. I've had the chance to see them grow up from tiny second graders who could barely write a sentence to blossoming authors who love reading, writing and ALL THINGS LEARNING! As my students continue to develop as learners they are beginning to take a more creative role as individual learners by attempting to dig deeper in everything they do, especially reading, which is a crucial skill for life. My students love reading and they love to question the author and discuss how the book is connected to their lives and the lives other others. These book discussions add to my students' lives educationally and socially. In order for us to continue digging deeper as readers we are in need of some class sets of books, which will allow us to have a lunchtime book club. At the lunch time book club, we will read literature for pleasure and have open discussions and projects based upon the books we're reading. If funded, this grant will give us a nice selection of books and learning materials for our lunch time book club, and will allow us to have a meaningful learning experience that will improve our reading, thinking and social skills. Help make a difference in the lives of NYC's greatest asset--it's youth, tomorrow's leaders!
