My Project

Do you remember how you felt when you were the oldest class in your school? Here at our school, we have a very small yet solid community. My bright class of fifth-grade students has been building meaningful relationships with their peers since they were in the lower grades. They bring a special blend of linguistic diversity, background knowledge, prior experiences, and culture to our school. We are a Title I school in a small community located in a big city; I have 22 students in my classroom.

My fifth graders are filled with curiosity and they crave answers through different experiences.

It will very soon be Lunar New Year and I would love to teach my students about the different cultures that celebrate Lunar New Year and how it's different than how we celebrate New Year here in America. For this project, I want my students to have access to many different books on the Lunar New Year about family, food, art, the 12 different animals, and how different cultures get ready for the Lunar New Year. We will use the papers and decor to create art based on the stories we read and even cook food that's served on or the day before New Year. We will be using the crock pot to make some famous dishes. The signature food we will make and eat is sweet rice balls (汤圆 Tāngyuán). It is a round-shaped food made of glutinous rice flour. The shape symbolizes being together with your loved one and a family reunion. The fortune cookie will be a nice final touch on the meal that we will have. The containers are for the leftovers that we might have so the students can take them for their families to try and educate them on what they have learned.
