Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This will be a 1st of its kind school-wide activity for all our 650+ students to experience the culture of the Lunar New Year. For this project, students will engage in the meaningful tradition of giving and receiving red envelopes, or hongbao, which symbolize good luck and prosperity. Each student will receive 2 red envelopes; one that will include a fake gold coin inside, representing good fortune for the new year, and the 2nd for an additional kindness activity. They will have an opportunity to receive one from their teacher with the gold coin and also to write a kind note and hand one to a student in a younger grade level. This project emphasizes the importance of celebrating diversity and understanding other traditions that enrich our world.

The goals include:

1.) Cultural Awareness: We want to foster an appreciation for the importance and practice of the Lunar New Year while connecting to the diverse backgrounds of our students.

2.) Community Building: We will strengthen our school's sense of unity by encouraging kindness and giving.

Our students are truly special for several reasons. As a resilient community of learners, comprised of 98% Latino students, they bring their rich cultural backgrounds and experiences to the classroom. Our students are part of a hardworking community of families that come together to celebrate diverse cultures. This will be a fun and memorable project for students to learn and share in this major cultural event.

Overall this Lunar New Year Project will support our school's value of inclusivity and kindness.
