My Students

Our school is located in an area that serves diverse groups of families. The uniqueness of our population ranges from generations of families who have attended to first time families.

My fifth graders are eager to learn, and become excited when they are able to connect what we learn in the classroom with their own experiences.

Each type of student brings a different perspective and need to the classroom. We practice kindness and empathy as we work and learn together on our fifth grade journey.

My Project

“Empathy is the most mysterious transaction that the human soul can have, and it’s accessible to all of us, but we have to give ourselves the opportunity to identify, to plunge ourselves in a story where we see the world from the bottom up or through another’s eyes or heart.” Sue Monk Kidd

I believe that teaching empathy and compassion is just as essential for students as achieving academic success.

Because of Harry’s tragic beginning, he is treated differently and made to believe he is less than. Once he learns of his past, he begins to make friends and finds that his differences and his friendships make him a better person.

My fifth graders will use this story to create an empathy web map. They will take note of when Harry or other characters show empathy on one side of the map then record when empathy is shown to them. Through this process, they will create goals of how to show empathy to their classmates, their family, their community, their state, and their nation. Each student will then present their findings in class, and do a final video reflection using flipgrid.
