Low-Tech Library STEAM Makerspace in a High-Tech World
Help me give my students a library Makerspace of low-tech STEAM activities with building materials like Strawbees and Keva Planks, collaboration and strategy practice with classic games and discussion cards, and fun art activities with Buddha Boards!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school library has been open for only one week and already nearly 30 students come through just at lunch for a place to read, color, or just sit at a table and talk with friends. Enter the game Truth-or-Dare. Perhaps not always the most appropriate game in a middle school library! But, the default to a game like this shows me one major thing: Students are demonstrating a desire to connect with one another in a genuine, playful, interactive way.
Through a low-tech Makerspace, the students are given this opportunity!
They can chat and negotiate with strategy within a set game boundary. The students will work together in low-tech engineering activities to build, problem-solve, and practice the skill of exchanging ideas. Not to mention, this gives them a chance for small acts of artistic expression which has been shown to increase mood and a feeling of calm.
In a world where the incredible tool of tech can sometimes stand between connection and collaboration, the community hub of a school library is the perfect place to disconnect while they connect!
