Our school is located in a remote area of Alaska that is full of rolling hills, rivers, and lakes, and an abundance of wildlife including birds, moose, caribou, bears, and more. The many families of our students live on the abundance of wildlife for their survival. Our town of Tok is the first settlement that travelers reach when traveling the Alcan Highway after leaving Canada.
My students live in a small community with about 1000 people living year-round within the immediate area.
We experience some of the coldest weather in the state. Students love to be outside in the snow, sledding, mushing dogs, or just going for walks. Students have a lot of time to spend indoors as well, reading and playing games with family and friends. Families teach their children how to safely enjoy the outdoors all year long. So many students love to read on the cold, winter nights.
My Project
My classroom library has very few low leveled books that students can use for quizzing. Many of my students are just now becoming independent readers. They need books that are interesting but also easy enough for them to read on their own.
My students need a variety of low leveled books to read independently which they can use for quizzing for Accelerated Reading.
Students will be able to improve their reading ability by starting low and moving forward step by step. As students gather independent successes, they will become better readers. Students will learn to read for pleasure as they grow as readers.
