My Students
I have a beautifully diverse population of 65 curious 5th grade math students, in a Title 1 school. At Morrison, we believe that "by cultivating learners who are curious, competent, socially-conscious, and self-assured, all students can and will live purposeful and successful lives in our increasingly complex and interconnected world."
Many of our students know the ugliness of poverty, and family financial challenges, all too well!
With equity in mind, I believe my students deserve to receive an engaging quality education, without constraints! My students are excited about math, and eager to learn. Especially since we are going back to in person instruction, my students are in need of lots of updated essential classroom learning tools.
My Project
Many cases of students lacking success in their classrooms have to do with students’ level of preparedness. For many of my students, having something as simple as dry erase markers for white boards, crayons, and sharpened pencils, can determine the progress and achievement of the student. In fact, many students are never truly prepared for the day because they come to class lacking supplies, thus leading to a lack of motivation and difficult time learning and/or staying engaged in the lessons.
Now that the year is halfway through, we have either run out of, or we have very low inventory on most of our essential supplies!
Our classroom stock of pencils, crayons, dry erase markers, teacher "Post-It" chart paper for anchor charts, and our dry erase white board erasers, etc., are pretty much depleted. In addition, we have a shortage of cleaning staff. Our students rotate to other classrooms, where we try to keep our classrooms clean and welcoming. However, if we want to keep each class tidy, we have to borrow a dustpan from our forth grade classroom, because we don't have one. Also, we have two class pets that our class cares for, and we don't have dust pans to clean up after we sweep around their cage.
Without the essential materials mentioned in this project, many students are likely to feel overwhelmed or unequipped, which can hinder their motivation and confidence. Having these supplies restocked would continue to allow them to make the most of their educational and classroom experiences!
