Imagine sitting in a classroom and not having the resources you need for school. What if you were beginning high school, but had not been exposed to the same technology as the other students? This is the question that has been on my mind as I prepare my students for the next level. I recently visited a local high school and realized that my elementary and middle school students need more exposure to technology to be ready for this transition.
My diverse learners come from a low-income/high poverty school district, and are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
They have multiple disabilities, but they are very determined to learn. My students love working on computers and benefit from them due to their disabilities. Many of them come from single parent households and receive a free lunch. As their teacher, I am determined to help them keep up with the other schools and to give them the best academic start I possibly can.
Having Chromebooks will allow our students to learn the same skills as their peers in economically advantaged neighborhoods. As low income students and diverse learners they are at a double disadvantage and this can cause them to fall behind. As diverse learners, these kids need multiple programs to help improve their trouble areas. They also make great gains when they are motivated by technology.
With your help, 18 students will be able to learn how to do research, practice skills in all subjects, and learn to use programs such as Microsoft Word and Google Docs, which are skills necessary for them to be successful in high school.
