This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the honor and esteemed pleasure of teaching some of the most dedicated and devoted students who have a love for innovation and learning. In the journey of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication, my students have gained a love for reading. We love the voice, choice, and passion for telling stories and reading about people from diverse societies.
Having diverse seating areas for students to express themselves allows my students to celebrate their voice, choice, and promotes collaboration.
My students are in need of a vast variety of seating arrangements to celebrate the love of learning.
I work in a school in which 90% of our students qualify for receiving free or reduced-price lunch. In the face of this adversity, students continue to thrive, create, and be innovative in their learning. I love my students' innate curiosity and the willingness to take risks love how they are fearless in dreaming big.
My Project
I am a firm believer in keeping the focus of education on what’s important: the students. In a world that is constantly evolving and I as a teacher must help my students evolve with it. The students in my classroom do not know a life without constant connectivity such as wi-fi, social media, and the easy access to a global community. Outside the windows to our classrooms is a dynamic, fast-paced ever-changing world full of choices. Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This process cannot be done when kids are sitting at rows of desks all day long. The answer to this is flexible seating.
Flexible seating allows for a variety of seating choices whether that be an exercise stability ball, stool, or bean bag chair.
It increases student motivation to learn . Research has shown that it is one of the best practices for kids because it promotes using excess energy , increased motivation,n and engagement, creating better oxygen flow to the brain . Matthew T. Maher a premier researcher on physical development writes, “Simple in class activities boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on task behavior.”
I have already started creating a flexible seating environment in my classroom with a few of my colleagues at our school site. What we are seeing is a greater sense of accountability from our students on the choices which and whom they choose to sit by relating to on task behavior. The more power we give our students the more power we get back . It allows be self aware of what environments they learn best and they are empowered by their choices.
